On the occasion of the 2023 International Day for Women In Maritime, we are glad to host an interview with President of WISTA International, Mrs. Elpi Petraki, who suggests key actions to turn challenges that women in maritime still face into opportunities.

On this year’s IMO International Day for Women in Maritime, observed on 18 May annually, we are excited to present feedback from female representatives who suggest ways to address the current gender imbalance in maritime.

As today is the International Day for Women in Maritime, Maersk's Chief Infrastructure Officer, Rabab Boulos, met with 2nd Officer Christina Andersson onboard Madrid Maersk to discuss being equal at sea. 

Susanne Justesen, who is leading the All Aboard Alliance team in the Global Maritime Forum, highlights that although there is often a special focus on women’s challenges, many of these challenges also affect men at sea.

Celebrated every year on May 18th, the International Day of Women in Maritime is an important day to remind to the entire industry that only by promoting gender equality, diversity, and inclusivity, industry stakeholders will ensure that the maritime sector remains inclusive, equitable, fosters innovation and creates opportunities for all.

International Maritime Organization (IMO) released a video for the International Day for Women in Maritime (May 18) under the theme Mobilizing networks for gender equality.

The Global Maritime Forum has released a report which shares the results from a study conducted by the All Aboard Alliance in the Diversity@Sea initiative, identifying the 15 'key pain points'  for women at sea following an analysis of interviews with 115 women seafarers serving onboard.

Mr Peter Jameson, Partner, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), highlights that ESG is more than just tackling with emissions. It equally involves actions like health and safety, diversity and equal opportunities, but these are often less regarded topics to a business’s development.

According to a Seafarers’ Charity recent report, women seafarers remain invisible and/or unintentionally overlooked by port-welfare workers. In that regard, the report provides eight (8) recommendations to port-welfare providers for consideration, with the aim to acquire a better understanding of women seafarers and their needs.

Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG) announced that, it has teamed up with the Women Offshore Foundation to award four scholarships to U.S. female maritime students.
