Leading shipowners and operators, classification societies, engine and technology builders and suppliers, big data providers, and oil companies met for the third meeting of the IMO-supported 'Global Industry Alliance to Support Low Carbon Shipping' Taskforce and an Ideas Generation Workshop, on 29-30 May, in UK.

Electric ferries and digital communication between ships can play an important role in decarbonising maritime transport. Hybrid vehicles, using electricity in the harbour and fossil fuels on the open sea are becoming increasingly widespread, while a digital system will optimise their route as well as their messages to and from the harbour authorities.

ECSA welcomed the proposal for the EU budget 2021 – 2027, published earlier this week, which foresees a large increase of the EU budget for Research, Innovation and Digital and for Climate and Environment. ECSA considers this increase could provide resources to support the European shipping industry in its transition to decarbonisation.

States meeting at the IMO MEPC 72 last month made no progress on agreeing a roadmap to devise the measures needed to implement immediate emissions cuts, said the sustainable group Transport & Environment, noting "it is now up to Europe and its climate allies to get things moving".

Speaking at the Singapore Maritime Week, the Chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping, Esben Poulsson, said the adoption by IMO of a strategy to reduce shipping emissions will be able to decarbonise the industry completely. ICS is also confident that the new technologies that are being launched will eventually deliver.

Member states at IMO MEPC 72 adopted the so-called GHG initial strategy, envisaging, for the first time, a reduction in total GHG emissions from global shipping by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008. Ms. Katharine Palmer, Environmental Manager at LR shared her views with respect to this historic agreement, explaining what the sector should expect for the day after.

There is a wide range of wind-assist and primary wind propulsion technology solutions that could offer 10-30% savings for retrofits, and up to 50% on smaller new built fully optimised vessels, helping the industry meet its ambitious carbon reduction targets, said IWSA, on the occasion of the IMO MEPC 72 this week.

The UK Chamber of Shipping's Communications Director, Jonathan Roberts, is talking with respect to the ongoing efforts currently discussed at IMO MEPC 72 to reduce the industry's environmental footprint. Mr. Roberts noted that any agreement reached this week will be a stepping stone in the global shipping decarbonisation deal.

The paper is an outcome of the Pacific Maritime Technical Officers Workshop on Shipping Emissions hosted by PIDF in Suva in February. The paper notes there is no agreement on what short-term measures (2018-2023) will be committed to, and when or how they would be implemented.
