The European Commission decided to send letters of formal notice to Cyprus, Greece and Malta for not levying the correct amount of Value-Added Tax on the provision of yachts, as this could generate "major distortions of competition and featured heavily in the coverage of last year's 'Paradise Papers' leaks."

In its latest issue paper, Oceans Beyond Piracy, touch upon the issue of  privately contracted armed maritime security, saying that the use of armed guards as a security solution at sea is characterized by private security companies providing armed protection for assets. 

Cyprus and India proceeded to sign a new agreement on merchant shipping, which entered into force last month and replaced a previous agreement between thew two countries, which was signed in the past, on 11 February 1997.

The Panama Maritime Authority issued a notice last month to warn that vessels cannot enter the Ports of Famagusta, Karavostasi and Kyrenia, as per order by the Republic of Cyprus. The country has taken restrictions in order to uphold and maintain its sovereignty.

DP World announced that a new modern terminal, designed to accommodate the largest operating cruise vessels, is scheduled to open in the summer at Limassol port. The new terminal consists of seven pods with an internal area of 7,000 square meters and offers 24-hour availability.

At the 28th Annual General Meeting of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber, in Lemesos, the President of the Republic talked about the important role that Shipping Chamber plays for the development of the country, since the beginning of its establishment in 1989. He also highlighted the government's plans to preserve the country's role in international shipping.

The Cyprus Department of Merchant Shipping announced the appointment of Christian Bahr as its sales executive in Germany. Based in Hamburg, Bahr will be responsible for communicating the competitive advantages of the Cyprus flag and maritime cluster to the German market.

The North of England P&I Club has announced that the transition from a state-owned port to a privately-owned port on 29 January 2017 have resulted a number of operational and logistical problems at the Port of Limassol.
