The EU research project MITIGATE has been completed and the ambitious goal of designing, developing and implementing a risk assessment and management system for the maritime transport chain in 30 months has been accomplished, according to Be Cyber Aware at Sea campaign.

Cyber security threats are not only increased, but they are becoming a part of maritime daily business. Therefore, it is important all industry’s stakeholders to understand the threat landscape, consider the given guidelines and comply with the upcoming legislation in order to be fully prepared to address the associated challenges.

Wärtsilä will cooperate with the cyber security company Templar Executives to set up a cyber academy in Singapore. The academy will offer courses to improve the collective cyber maturity of the shipping community. The courses will cover various topics, from cyber security coaching for senior management, to cyber awareness for all organisational levels within the maritime industry.

One of the key focal areas that MPA will drive is the protection of Critical Information Infrastructures. As such, it will establish a 24/7 Maritime Cybersecurity Operation Centre, by the third quarter of this year, to further augment capabilities for early detection, monitoring, analysis and response to potential cyber attacks. 

We hear that ISO 27001 is a non-technical systems focused standard. This may confuse most of us and create queries on how this standard may help organizations, including the maritime ones, achieve the EU GDPR.

The insurance losses and liabilities arising from cyber risks is an increasing area of focus for both shipowners and their insurers, argues Mr. Adrian Durkin, Director (Claims) and Mr. Colin Gillespie, Deputy Director (Loss Prevention) at North P&I Club. 

Considering that shipping inudstry is progressively using systems relied on digitization, integration and automation, cyber security threats are not only increased, but they are becoming a part of maritime daily business. In the April issue of its Phish & Ships newsletter providing insights and latest updates on maritime cyber security, Be Cyber Aware at Sea focuses among others on the latest cyber attack at the Danish Svitzer, a Maersk subsidiary. After the latter was hit by a massive cyber attack in June 2017, Svitzer revealed in March 2018 it has also suffered a significant data breach.

The upgrade of current technologies or the development of new applications open a new world of opportunities. However, we are not talking about technologies that will appear in the distant future but about technologies that do not exist at present and are expected to come within the next five years. These will impact many industries and shipping in not an exception.

SHI’s Smart Ship Solution aims to improve vessel efficiency by using real time data from hull and equipment sensors, in cooperation with land-based technical and fleet managers. Real time data will be exchanged between ship and shore facilities, to enable automated operations, and is among the most important cybersecurity challenges for the marine and offshore industries.
