The short video-issued by DNV GL, aims to raise awareness into cyber risk and how it can affect ship operations. Hackers today are becoming more and more sophisticated, so by the time someone realize that something goes wrong, it is usually too late. This is why cyber security is an issue of mindset and culture.

UK’s National Cyber Security Centre published an infographic, explaining basic terms of cyber security. Cyber security’ is defined as ‘The protection of devices, services and networks — and the information on them — from theft or damage’ and 'cyber incident' as a ‘breach of a system’s security rules’.

While speaking at the SAFETY4SEA Cyber Masterclass, Mr. Max J. Bobys, Vice President, HudsonCyber, presented the rapidly evolving cyber risk landscape, specifically in the maritime industry. Mr. Bobys discussed the IMO's current cyber risk management framework, and he referred to common questions into challenges shipping companies face, along with forthcoming trends.  

ECDIS is possible to be hacked, causing confusion regarding the size and the location of vessels, in order to trigger other ships' collision alarms. This could possibly block the English Channel, even though the University of Plymouth's Maritime Cyber Threats said that reaching the worst case scenario is extremely unlikely.

While speaking at the recent SAFETY4SEA Cyber Masterclass, Mr. Colin Gillespie, Deputy Director (Loss Prevention), The North of England P&I Club, highlighted that the risk of cyber-attacks is a continuing and evolving threat across all industries and sectors. Shipping companies are no exception.

Chairman of IACS Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen identified the need for classification societies and IACS itself to be adaptable and prepared for change, while at the same time staying true to the core purpose of classification. Mr. Ørbeck-Nilssen said that great progress had been made in making classification able to deal with the digital transformation.

Classification society DNV GL announced that it released its first class notations, aiming to help shipowners and operators protect their assets from cyber security threats. The new class notations are called "Cyber secure" and they will be published on 1 July 2018. The Cyber secure class notations have three different qualifiers: Basic; Advanced; and +.

While speaking at SAFETY4SEA Cyber Masterclass, Mr. Nick Taylor, Consultant, Shoreline, provided feedback on Cyber or IT Security from the insurer’s perspective, noting that shipowners are called to address them. The pressure is not as severe as that imposed by the Oil Pollution Act 1990, where attitudes to prevent environmental pollution had to change.

Rising passenger numbers on cruise ships have resulted in the introduction of new technologies and the internet of things which makes the journey more engaging and personalised. However, there is a flip side, and with thousands of people’s information available cruise line digitisation makes them a target for hackers.

While speaking at the last SMART4SEA Conference, Mr. Giampiero Soncini, Senior Advisor, RINA, noted that digital revolution to industry is normal considering the use and impact that technology has already had on our lives.
