Small Container Ships Face Challenges, Report Says

Face uncertain demand and growing competition from larger vessels Container ships with capacities of 1,000-2,000 20-foot equivalent container units face uncertain cargo demand and growing competition from larger vessels, DVB Bank's Research and Strategic Planning unit said. This sub-sector "will have difficulty in defending its market share in the uncertain economic environment from the increasing number of larger-capacity vessels that will be delivered in the market over the next couple of years," DVB said in a report on the market outlook for small container ships. The report said the global fleet of "handy-size" ships with capacities of 1,000-2,000 TEUs totals 1,277 vessels with 1.8 million TEUs of total capacity.Of these, 1,175 ships are on identifiable trade routes - 785 on intra-Asia or other regional routes, mostly 372 on north-south or secondary east-west services and 18 on primary east-west trade routes. These smaller ships face difficulty from mid-size vessels being pushed into regional trade routes."The accommodation of larger-capacity vessels such as super post-Panamax and post-Panamax vessels in the short-haul regional trades will continue to have a dampening effect on the handy-size sub-sector," the report said.About two-thirds of the handy-size container ship fleet is controlled by independent owners, mostly German interests. Current orders ...

They are among the largest container ships sailing the world's oceans today It was a special event, indeed. At the weekend, the Hamburg shipowner E.R. At 366 metres long, 48.2 metres wide and 15.5 metres draught, they are among the largest container ships sailing the world's oceans today. The "E.R. Benedetta" and the "E.R. Cristina" are the 100th and 101st ships put into operation by E.R. Schiffahrt, which was founded in 1998. The huge container ships will be commissioned on 29 November and 20 December 2011 and will fly the German flag. There will be two cadets in each of the ship's 20-person crews. "These will be the last ships that we will sail under the German flag for the time being. We are currently waiting to see if the German federal government will continue to contribute to the German Maritime Association," explained Albert Schumacher, CEO of E.R. Schiffahrt. In the past the government has helped ship management companies partially offset some of the competitive drawbacks they face in comparison to ships flying foreign flags via its contributions to the German Maritime Association, but this may cease ...

Stricken ship off New Zealand almost in two, businesses count cost

MV Rena has been stuck for nine days , spilling about 300 tonnes of heavy toxic fuel Salvage teams raced on Friday to resume pumping oil from a stricken container ship which has almost split into two pieces off the New Zealand coast as businesses started to count the cost of the country's worst environmental disaster in decades. The Liberian-flagged Rena has been stuck for nine days on a reef 14 miles (22 km) off Tauranga on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island, spilling about 300 tonnes of heavy toxic fuel and some of its hundreds of containers into the sea.Authorities said the 236-metre (775-foot) ship was in a precarious position, as salvage teams prepared to cut holes in the stern to get to the tanks holding more than 1,000 tonnes of fuel."What's holding the vessel together at the moment is the fact she's lying on the reef and some internal structures, companionways, ducting and the like inside the vessel," Maritime NZ spokesman Andrew Berry told a meeting of local residents. The salvage teams are working to install equipment and platforms on the high side of the aft section of the 47,230-tonne ship, which is listing at up to 25 ...

Container Shipping in Pirates Crosshairs

Container ships operate faster than the tankers and bulkers, making them more difficult targets Those who ship goods by container have barely been impacted by piracy off East Africa. Container ships have high freeboard and despite slow-steaming by carriers to save on fuel, they operate faster than the tankers and bulkers, making them more difficult targets for pirates. That's the good news for container shippers. The bad news is that piracy is growing, and sooner or later container ships operating from Asia to Europe, or Asia to North America via the Suez Canal, are going to be in the crosshairs of piracy. The news isn't good. According to monitoring body the International Maritime Bureau, pirate attacks were up 36 percent in the first half of 2011.The shipping industry is increasingly alarmed, and with good reason. Listen to the International Chamber of Shipping, which represents 80 percent of the world merchant fleet, in a release on Sept. 28th marking World Maritime Day (which the International Maritime Organization dedicated to raising awareness of piracy). The ICS "is deeply concerned that little real progress is being made towards developing any radical new strategy that will deliver immediate results. The industry seems to be faced with the ...

Gloomy outlook for container shipping market

Rates halve in Q3 amid fears of new recession The container shipping market may remain bleak for the rest of the year, after seeing shipping rates halved in the third quarter, an expert warnedSunny Ho, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Shippers' Council, said part of the reason rates had crashed was that western buyers were tightening their purse strings amid growing fears of global recession.Ho said: "We can't see any major factors that can help stimulate US economic recovery - and Europe's situation is even worse."The emerging markets have grown faster than the European and US markets, but they are unable to make up for the weak demand in traditional markets of Europe and the US."The Shanghai Containerised Freight Index (SFCI) for European routes tumbled 56% to an average of $807.86 per teu in Q3 from $1,842.67 in the same period last year.Average container shipping rates from Shanghai to the US west coast fell 40% year on year to $1,639.93.The SFCI serves as a barometer for global trade as it tracks the rates of shipping companies that mainly moves manufactured goods such as shoes, clothes and furniture from the world's factory of China to consumers in western countries.Shares of ...
