Two container ships collide at Busan Port

The container ship Safmarine Nokwamda collided with the container ship Tianjin, while berthing at Busan Container Terminal, on March 2. Both ships sustained damages, while several container fell from Tianjin. Both ships have now departed Busan and are continuing their voyages. Safmarine Nokwanda is going to China, with Tianjin heading to the Americas.

Ten people died on Norwegian commercial vessels during 2018

The Norwegian Maritime Authority informed that despite a slight decrease in the number of accidents in 2018, there was an increase in the number of fatalities. Specifically, ten people died in 2018, in comparison to seven in 2017. Seven of the fatalities in 2018 took place on fishing vessels. About half (53%) of fatal accidents over the last five years, are attributed to personal accidents.

Watch: Ferries collision in Italy

The ferries Don Peppino and Benito Buono collided with each other in Ischia port, Italy, on February 23. The incident took place due to stormy weather conditions at the port, with both ships sustaining minor damages. Benito Buono was struck at its the stern as the ship was berthing. As for Don Peppino, it continued its voyage to Naples despite bow damage.

Bulker collides with fishing vessel, five missing

A Panamax bulker collided with a fishing vessel in Zhejiang Province waters, on February 23. At the time of the incident, the fishing vessel had seven crew on board. Of them, two were rescued, while the remaining five are missing. The bulk carrier was heading from Tangshan, China, Yellow sea, to Zhuhai, South China. The ship received orders to stop its voyage, and wait for investigation.

Cargo ship collides with crew transfer vessel off Rügen

On February 19, a cargo ship collided with the crew transfer vessel World Bora, off the island of Rügen. The CTV was carrying 15 crewmembers at the time. Of them, five were injured lightly, while ten were more seriously injured. Both ships sustained damages on their hulls, but there was no pollution reported. The police is currently investigating the incident to determine the cause of the collision.

Insufficient risk management led cargo ship to contact wharf

ATSB published its final report into the cargo ship 'Madang Coast' impacting a wharf at the Port of Townsville. The risk management processes were not sufficiently mature nor resilient enough to identify and mitigate risks in pilotage services. The incident has led to the updating and full implementation of a safety management system, in order to better identify risks and how to mitigate them.
