MSF has published two safety alerts relating to potential dropped objects from cargo operations. In the first incident, the crew found a twist lock pocket cover missing from the aft main deck and in the second, the crew on a platform noticed an object on top of a container onboard the supply vessel. 

The West of England Club said it regularly receives claims arising from alleged shortages of solid bulk cargoes, as a result of discrepancies between draught survey results. Draught surveys by their nature are not an exact science, but there are occasions when considerable differences in the cargo figures from draught surveys are obtained.

The containerized cargo in Latin American and the Caribbean ports increased around 6.1% in 2017, according to data released by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean. This shows a rebound over the last three years, when low or negative growth rates in container throughput were recorded.

On the occasion of Maersk Honam’s berthing and the commencement of discharging operations on 22 May, the Mediterranean Shipping Company announced that it is imposing additional charges to its customers if they want their cargo to reach the final destination. The company is therefore requesting an amount of 750 USD per 20’/1250 USD per 40’.

Four months into 2018, the Port of Long Beach has moved 2.5 million TEUs, an amount more than 17% above last year’s record pace. In April, dockworkers handled 618,438 TEUs, a 10.8% increase above the same month last year. Import containers increased by 8.4% to 312,376 TEUs compared to last April.

Stepping up its efforts to become the world’s first fully autonomous harbor by the end of the year, the Chinese port of Caofeidian will have 20 human-driven trucks replaced by autonomous terminal tractor-trucks. The port of Caofeidian, located in the city of Tangshan, currently handles around 300,000 TEU containers a year.

Dubai-based port operator DP World partnered with US-based Virgin Hyperloop One to launch DP World Cargospeed, a new global company intended to provide hyperloop-enabled cargo systems to support the fast, sustainable and efficient delivery of palletised cargo. This is the first initiative of its kind in the world.

Container throughput in the Port of Rotterdam increased by 4.6% by weight to 35.9 million tonnes and 6.1% by volume to 3.5 million TEUs. This increase continues from last year and is caused by increased throughput performance of the port’s large container terminals. However, there was less freight than in the same period last year.

The port of Antwerp reported a very good first quarter with a freight volume of 58,328,678 tonnes, an increase of 7.1% from the same period last year. The main driver of the increase is the container freight which had a growth of 9.5% compared with the first three months of 2017. The container volume rose by 9.5% to 32,580,600 tonnes.
