West of England Club highlights the importance of safely securing cargo, in order to avoid any incidents. The Club continues to receive claims in respect of cargo shifting due to inadequate securing where roll trailers have been used. This can either be inadequate securing of the load to the trailer or inadequate securing of the trailer to the vessel, or a combination of both.

In its Monthly Safety Scenario for April, the Swedish Club describes a case of cargo damage caused by water ingress due to a crack on the hatch coaming. The incident resulted in several days of delay for the ship to get the wet cargo off the vessel, while most of the cargo was refused by the buyer.

TT Club, an international transport and logistics insurer, launched the Cargo Integrity campaign due to the increase of container ship fires and in favour of the safety of the seafarers. Taking the maritime segment of global supply chain, it is estimated that a major container ship fire at sea occurs on average every 60 days, albeit that there have already been four major cargo-related fire incidents in 2019.

A Belize-flagged general cargo vessel was on fire off Italy, and its crew was evacuated as local sources state. The 18 crewmembers were saved and no injuries have been reported. Thus, authorities are investigating the incident to find out the exact cause.

In its latest cargo claims review, the Swedish Club informs of a cargo damage incident on a bulk carrier, caused by leaking hatch covers. The incident highlights the need for a regular inspection of the hatch covers by the crew to ensure that the weathertight integrity is maintained.

In its annual Cargo Claims Review, the Swedish Club informed of a cargo fire caused by moving cargo due to inclement weather conditions. The case highlighted the importance of detailed plans and discussions among Master, Chief officer, technical manager or charterer, when it is about critical cargo operations. 

Bulk carriers constitute a significant fragment of the global maritime transport of goods, making up 15–17% of the world's merchant fleets. Bulk carrier operations require careful planning and preparation to maintain cargo quality as is and to avoid any delays and disputes. One critical aspect of this preparation is the cargo hold cleaning.

The UK P&I Club drew attention to cargo fire risks associated with the lighting system in a vessel hold. The Club was notified by New Zealand TAIC of such incident and advised that alternative LED lighting should be considered, to reduce the risk posed by lights that radiate high levels of heat.

Ahead of IMO's meeting of the Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers in London this week, TT Club is calling for more urgent action on issues regarding the safety of container transport. TT Club is mainly concerned about mis-declared dangerous goods.

This technology can be proven very useful, as the data generated by such devices could provide better solutions to mitigate risk. Sensors can also be combined with other developments, like blockchain.
