Canada announced the lifting of navigation restrictions in certain zones previously identified in Interim Order no.3 Respecting Flooded Areas, due to improved navigational safety conditions and following consultations with local authorities and law enforcement.

Canadian transport company Seaspan Ferries announced it will be adding two new LNG – battery hybrid ferries to its fleet. With construction scheduled to begin in 2019, the vessels are expected to go into operation in 2021. 

On the aftermath of the man overboard incident involving the container ship 'Maersk Patras', the ITF called on the Transport Canada to ban foreign-crew from undertaking dangerous lashing work while vessels are underway in the Saint Lawrence river.

A Canadian Senate committee voted against Bill C-48, which would ban oil tankers from docking on British Columbia’s northern coast. This means the Senate advised the federal government not to proceed with the bill enacting the oil tanker moratorium on that stretch of coast.

GCT Global Container Terminals announced its $160 million investment to densify and modernize GCT Vanterm. This will create about 1,200 new direct and indirect jobs and generate $77 million in wages and $187 million in GDP per year. GCT Vanterm, is amongst the most productive terminals in North America. The $160 million upgrade at GCT Vanterm aspires to increase container handling capacity by around 25%.

The Port of Oakland, in US' Pacific coast, announced it has begun negotiations with a Canadian building materials shipper to transport sand and gravel to the Port, marking return of bulk shipping operations to the Port for the first time in 20 years. 

DP World agreed to buy Canadian marine terminal Fraser Surrey Docks from a Macquarie Group fund. The terminal will be purchased through the Canadian subsidiary DP World Canada Investment Inc, which is 45% owned by Caisse de dépot et placement du Québec. The deal is expected to finalize during the first half of 2019.

Macquarie Group has reached an agreement to sell the largest container terminal in Eastern Canada. Namely, it finalized a deal to hand over the Halterm terminal at the Port of Halifax to PSA International Pte Ltd. PSA International will also buy Penn Terminals in Philadelphia from the Australian firm.

Transport Canada has implemented new seasonal speed restriction zones that ships must follow in the western Gulf of St. Lawrence. Canada has put these zones in place to reduce the risk of fatal strikes to North Atlantic right whales by transiting vessels. Vessels must proceed at a speed of not more than 10 knots over the ground in the speed restriction zones.

According to Reuters, the US refused to sign an agreement in the Arctic due to discrepancies over climate change wording, risking the cooperation in the polar region at the sharp edge of global warming. The meeting between eight nations in Finland's Rovaniemi on Tuesday, May 7, was aiming to provide a two-year agenda to balance the challenge of global warming, with sustainable development of mineral wealth.
