According to the Canadian Government, the Minister of Transport, Marc Garneau, issued a statement based on unfortunate deaths of many North Atlantic right whales in Canadian waters; Because of this, he implemented a precautionary speed restriction of 10 knots, for vessels of 20 metres and more, that sail in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, in the two designated shipping lanes north and south of Anticosti Island. 

As part of its efforts on environmental leadership, the Government of Canada announced a $275 million investment supporting LNG Canada’s major LNG complex in Kitimat, British Columbia. This $40 billion project represents the largest single private sector investment in the history of the country.

The Government of Canada announced that it is to invest $17 million in infrastructure projects that create quality, middle-class jobs and support economic growth. Specifically, the investment aims to increase capacity at the Port of Belledune to move Canadian goods to international markets.

Desgagnés, the Canadian Shipping company, concducting christening operations and an inauguration ceremony for its new polar class tankers on June 20. The ceremony was for the dual fuel/LNG vessels Paul A. Desgagnés and Rossi A. Desgagnés was held at the Port of Quebec. Featuring almost 15,000 dwt and tanks with a capacity of more than 17,000 m³, the ships were built at the Besiktas shipyard in Turkey.

Canada's Minister of transport, Marc Garneau, announced that the Oil Tanker Moratorium Act (Bill C-48) has received Royal Assent. According to the Act, oil tankers transferring crude and persistent oils as cargo from stopping, loading or unloading at ports or marine installations in northern British Columbia. The Act aims to protect, to some level, the area’s marine ecosystems, which are vulnerable to the developing marine shipping.

According to a report published by the Parliamentary Budget Officer's estimate, the anticipated cost of the Royal Canadian Navy's new surface combatant ships has increased because of delays and an increase in the size of the ship. 

The Government of Canada announced earlier in 2019 that it is investing $2.4 million in scientific research at the Huntsman Marine Science Centre, to boost knowledge on oil spill response as part of its efforts to keep its oceans clean, safe and healthy.

The Government of Canada announced that it is entering into contract negotiations with Chantier Davie of Lévis, Quebec, for the construction of two new ferries for Transport Canada, to support safe and efficient ferry services for sustainable communities and economies.

Canada's Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, announced that the Government is taking additional steps to reduce Canada’s plastic waste, support innovation, and promote the use of affordable and safe alternatives. These measures will be based in scientific evidence and will align with similar actions being taken in the EU and other countries.

Marc Garneau, the Canadian Minister of Transport, published the new Ballast Water Regulations in the Canada Gazette, Part I, on June 8, 2019. Created after extensive dialogue with industry, scientists, engineers and international partners, the proposed regulations aim to strengthen current rules and reduce the risks to Canada’s environment and economy related to aquatic invasive species.
