Hibernia Management and Development Company Ltd. is continuing response efforts regarding a release from the platform on July 17. Production remains shut in, while HMDC is continuing its investigation. The initial slick size was estimated by HMDC to be 900m x 20m, while it was also estimated to be approximately 4.6 kms at its widest part.

Canada's Transportation Safety Board (TSB) issued an investigation report on the uncontrolled fall of a rescue boat during a drill onboard the RoRo passenger ferry 'Queen of Cumberland' in April 2018 off British Columbia, that caused two injuries. The investigation found that incorrect securement led to the fall. 

The Government of Canada announced a $100.000 investment for the second phase of Intelligent Boating, focusing on keeping safe and improving boating safe practices for the Canadians who sail with their boats on lakes, rivers and coastal waters. 

As part of its efforts to support jobs and economic growth, the Government of Canada announced a major investment of $102 million for five projects aimed to increase efficiency at the Port of Vancouver and move Canadian goods to international markets.

The Government of Canada launched the Enhanced Maritime Situational Awareness initiative pilot project in May 2019, in support of the user-friendly , local data on marine traffic and boost the Canadian indigenous local communities. Thus, the Minister announced a new funding of $6.9 million to attract more participants in the project and also announced the expansion of the pilot project until March 2022.

The Government of Canada has introduced several measures to address risks endangered whales face by marine shipping and fishing activity. For this reason, Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, fined one vessel $6000 alleged non-compliance of a temporary mandatory speed restriction. 

Canadian energy company FortisBC entered into its first term supply agreement to produce LNG for Hong Kong-based Top Speed Energy Corp. to export to China, representing a first in Canada's LNG export industry. This was made possible by the completion of the Tilbury LNG expansion project in Delta.

Hibernia Management and Development Company notified the C-NLOPB on July 17, 2019 of an oil slick observed on the water near the Hibernia platform, located 315 kilometres from St. John’s, NL. EU and Canada entered into an agreement aiming to tackle illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fisheries, marine pollution and climate change. The agreement will enable the easy implementation of the 3030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, mostly focusing on Goal 14, while also will facilitate the sustainable development of marine and maritime sectors. 

Shore power enables ships equipped with the necessary equipment to shut down diesel powered auxiliary engines and plug into land-based electrical power. This reduces emissions of pollutants that damage air quality and GHG emissions that contribute to climate change. It also reduces engine noise.
