New product ensures crew are safe

A new product from  international ship supplier Hutton's will help ensure crew are able to operate safely within the law - which is particularly important as legislation to strengthen safety at sea comes into force. Hutton's is able to supply a new type of breathalyser machine which does away with the need for complicated, time-consuming recalibration and servicing. This efficient, lightweight machine is extremely accurate and able to record alcohol levels to three decimal places of 0.1mg/litre blood at an accuracy level of +/- 0.01%. The Manila Amendments to the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Convention are due to come into force this year and will further reduce the blood-alcohol limits for seafarers at work. John MacDonald, General Manager of Hutton's Medical, said: "This machine is very effective and only the very complex and expensive machines used in police stations can produce a more accurate result. This model is particularly appropriate for use at sea because it does not require regular recalibration. Instead the user just needs to replace the sensor once a year or after 300 tests. "In this era of improving safety, we are delighted to be able to offer the Alcoscan AL7000 breathalyser to our ...

New Active Heave Compensated cranes from Huisman

Huisman introduces a new crane type during this year's OTC: the ‘Rope Luffing Knuckle Boom Crane'. These new active heave compensated (AHC) cranes provide unparalleled performance by combining the benefits of a normal Rope Luffing Crane and a traditional Knuckle Boom Crane. As such it offers a high lifting height and a large capacity at outreach. The main hoist system, the patented anti-twist device, and the electric drive system really set these cranes apart from other cranes in the market. The capacities of the new cranes range from 400 up to 1,200 ton and up to 5,000 meter water depth. The first crane of this type, a 900 ton Rope Luffing Knuckle Boom Crane for Subsea 7's ‘Seven Arctic', is scheduled for delivery in 2016. A model of this vessel including the crane will be presented at the OTC Huisman booth, no. 2327. For the innovative and patented design proven key components are used. By combining these components the overall construction weight of the crane can be kept low, whilst allowing for a high lifting capacity and large lifting radius. By incorporating a knuckle in the design of the crane it is possible to reduce the pendulum of the hook ...

Cathelco new Quantum control panel design

Cathelco have introduced a new series of Quantum control panels for their sea water pipework anti-fouling systems and impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) systems. The new panels provide numerous benefits, but the most significant breakthrough is the ease with which the systems can be controlled and monitored. This is combined with much more comprehensive information about system performance. The main principle behind the design of the new control panels is greater connectivity. They produce an RS485 signal which enables the systems to be governed from a more convenient location such as a control room or the ship's bridge computers. "The Quantum project has been driven by the fact that manning levels on ships have decreased in recent years which means that there is less time for crew members to check individual items of equipment on a daily basis. We have responded with control panels which record more data and make it instantly available", said Peter Lindley who has headed the project at Cathelco. The Quantum seawater pipework anti-fouling system control panel is designed with a touch screen giving access to displays which show anode outputs, alarm set points, trend graphs, data history, language settings and current reduction facilities. The data ...

Maritime Unmanned Navigation through Intelligence in Networks

The project MUNIN - Maritime Unmanned Navigation through Intelligence in Networks - is a collaborative research project, co-funded by the European Commissions under its Seventh Framework Programme. MUNIN aims to develop and verify a concept for an autonomous ship, which is defined as a vessel primarily guided by automated on-board decision systems but controlled by a remote operator in a shore side control station. Maritime transport within the EU faces challenges such as significant increases in transport volumes, growing environmental requirements and a shortage of seafarers in the future. The concept of the autonomous ship brings along the potential to overcome these challenges. It allows for more efficient and competitive ship operation and increases in the environmental performance of vessels. Furthermore the shore based approach offers "seafaring" the possibility to become more socially sustainable by reducing the time seafarers spend away from their families. Within MUNIN a consortium of eight partners led by Fraunhofer CML with scientific and industrial background will reflect upon operational, technical and legal aspects in connection with the vision of an autonomous ship. Solutions for e.g. an autonomous bridge, an autonomous engine room, a shore side operation center and the communication architecture linking vessel and a ...

Trojan Marinex BWT system obtains IMO type approval

Trojan Technologies announced that the Trojan Marinex Ballast Water Treatment (BWT) product suite has obtained International Maritime Organization (IMO) Type Approval from Det Norske Veritas (DNV) on behalf of the Norwegian Maritime Directorate. "The IMO Type Approved Trojan Marinex product suite is a reflection of our forward-looking commitment to our customers," says Marvin DeVries, president, Trojan Technologies. "We performed our certification process, in every way possible, to the rigorous standards required by the United States Coast Guard, supporting our goal of achieving U.S. Type Approval this year. Testing was successfully completed in the most challenging conditions. This dispels the myth that UV cannot be used in the poorest of water qualities and gives vessel owners the confidence and reassurance they deserve, knowing that their operations will be unencumbered." Here are five differentiating facts about the Trojan Marinex BWT system IMO Type Approval: Testing was conducted under the supervision of DNV, who is now certified as an Independent Lab (IL) by the United States Coast Guard (USCG), in accordance with United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Ballast Water Protocol. The ETV protocol is a key testing requirement for systems to obtain USCG Type Approval. Land-based testing was ...

Harren & Partner implements DNV GL ShipManager for entire fleet

German-based shipowner Harren & Partner will implement the DNV GL business intelligence software systems ShipManager Analyzer and ShipManager QHSE for its entire fleet of 52 vessels. Both innovative systems will enable Harren & Partner to extract data from operational systems and optimize management of its ships. The first trial implementation for the two software systems is expected to be running in April. By mid-year the entire fleet will have ShipManager Analyzer and ShipManager QHSE installed, allowing the integrated solution to support the improved performance, efficiency and safety of Harren & Partner´s fleet of container feeder vessels, bulk and heavy lift carriers, tankers, multi-purpose carriers and dock ships, ranging from 4,000 to 76,000 tdw. DNV GL won the tender after Harren & Partner conducted an in-depth review of available software on the market for its fleet, using sophisticated tools in order to evaluate the capabilities of all of the leading solutions. Key reasons ShipManager software was chosen were flexibility, potential for further extensions and ease of use. "The software is designed by professionals for professionals in the shipping industry," says Capt. Hausler, Director of Quality and Safety at Harren & Partner Germany. "Both our companies work with compliance to higher safety ...
