Data from the first quarter of 2024 from the International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network’s (ISWAN) helpline SeafarerHelp points to the complex working conditions facing many seafarers.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) are working jointly to combat violence and harassment, including sexual harassment, bullying and sexual assault, in the maritime sector. 

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has launched a set of "Industry principles for establishing effective measures to combat and eliminate harassment and bullying in the maritime sector".

The Seafarers’ International Union of Canada (SIU) have published a report on workplace harassment and bullying within the Canadian marine sector, which indicates that 46% of seafarers have experienced harassment or bullying at some point in their career as a seafarer.

According to Bitannia Club, bullying and harassment can lead to a range of negative consequences, from low staff morale to poor work performance, absenteeism, resignations, distractions, and even health and safety accidents. 

The Danish Maritime Authority has conducted a survey on quantitative and qualitative results of a study of bullying and harassment in the Danish merchant fleet.

The SAFETY4SEA Crew Welfare Week took place 20-22 June 2023, where various presentations and panel discussions explored issued surrounding crew welfare. Mental health and welfare were also discussed as it is a crucial aspect of a person's wellbeing. 

A coalition of UK-based organisations concerned about seafarers’ welfare have come together to address abuse, bullying, harassment, discrimination, and violence at sea.

According to the data from ISWAN’s helplines, the number of seafarers reporting abuse, bullying, harassment or discrimination increased by almost 50% in Q1 2023 compared to the previous quarter.
