UKHO launches ADMIRALTY e-Nautical Publications

The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) has launched a number of its Nautical Publications as e-books for the mariner - allowing bridge crews to add ADMIRALTY Notices to Mariners (NM) updates faster and more accurately, and giving them easier access to information they need. Bridge crews can add weekly NMs next to each relevant e-NP page in just a few seconds. This makes the task of receiving corrections far easier and quicker compared to the paper-based products, giving bridge crews more time to focus on other important duties. Displayed using the UKHO developed ADMIRALTY e-Reader, this software is easy-to-use, and is supplied as part of the service at no extra cost. e-NPs provide the same level of compliance as traditional ADMIRALTY paper-based Nautical Publications and have been approved by Flag States of the majority of ships trading internationally, including the MCA. ADMIRALTY e-NPs can also aid inspections by allowing the mariner to clearly show when a publication was last updated. ADMIRALTY e-NPs can be used on up to three PCs on board per license. ADMIRALTY e-NPs comprise of: ADMIRALTY Sailing Directions - often known as "Pilots", they provide valuable extra information during port entry and coastal navigation. Designed to be ...

Another repeat order for Alfa Laval’s PureSOX

Cleaning exhaust from multiple enginesThe PureSOX system installed aboard the M/V Plyca is a multiple-inlet system, able to clean the exhaust gas from both the main and auxiliary engines. The same will be true for the deliveries in the new order. Each will serve four Wärtsilä engines with a combined power of 28 MW, handling an exhaust gas mass flow of 132,000 kg/h.Spliethoffs experience with the multiple-inlet installation aboard the M/V Plyca is that it is both efficient and reliable. As Diks explains, this can be expected no matter how many of the inlets are used at a given time. With PureSOX, weve established very effective means of closing off the pathways from engines that arent in use, he says. Centrifugal separation a key to successAnother area where PureSOX has proven effective is the cleaning of the scrubber wash water.PureSOX saves on caustic soda and fresh water by operating in an open loop with seawater. But in low-alkalinity waters or in harbours and other areas where discharge is strictly regulated, a closed loop with fresh water is an alternative. The fresh water in a closed loop must be cleaned, which has proven an Achilles heel for many exhaust gas cleaning systems. ...

Alfa Laval Test & Training Centre in Denmark

After months of intense preparation, the doors of the Alfa Laval Test & Training Centre in Aalborg, Denmark are open. Located on the site of the former Aalborg shipyard, this massive ship simulation facility - the largest and most advanced in the marine industry - now adds considerable muscle to Alfa Laval's research and development efforts. The Alfa Laval Test & Training Centre comprises a 250 m2 testing area, built around a 2 MW marine engine and comprising commercial and prototype equipment from all of Alfa Laval's marine product groups. Connected to the test system are a dedicated control room and a training complex, as well as the nearby Limfjord, which supplies it with seawater via an 800 m pipeline. Visitors received their first look at the operational facility during an inauguration ceremony on 15 January, when the start button was pressed by Peter Leifland, President of Alfa Laval Marine & Diesel. Stepping aboard a vessel on land The highlight for those attending the inauguration was not the pomp and circumstance, but rather the opportunity to be guided through the Alfa Laval Test & Training Centre's inner workings. While their colleagues mingled or spoke with Alfa Laval representatives, small groups ...

Alfa Laval has won an order from the Korean company Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) for a freshwater generator module to an offshore oil platform in the North Sea. The order, booked in the Energy & Environment segment early January, has a value of approximately SEK 110 million. Delivery is scheduled for 2014. The Alfa Laval equipment will be installed onboard the platform where it will convert seawater into both potable and process water. "This is another large order from the oil and gas industry which confirms the continued positive development we see in the sector. It also proves our strong position as a reliable supplier of equipment for these demanding applications," says Lars Renström, President and CEO of the Alfa Laval Group. Source: Alfa Laval
