Zurich-based technology company ABB announced the signing of a contract with Singaporean shipyard Keppel Offshore & Marine to jointly develop an autonomous tug to operate from 2020. Upon project completion, the vessel is anticipated to be South Asia’s first autonomous tug.

Technology company ABB is to install first shore-to-ship power solution at South Korea's Port of Incheon, enabling passenger vessels to cut emissions, noise and vibrations at berth. This will also be the first shore power solution in South Korea.

ABB opened a Marine Service Center in Russia aiming to support the growing Arctic maritime industries. The newly inaugurated center aspires to support ABB’s ship power, propulsion and automation technologies and expand service capabilities for ice-going vessels. The new center occupies 2,000 m2 in a purpose-built facility with electrical and mechanical testing areas, and a workshop served by overhead gantry cranes.

ABB announced it will provide a solution for a newbuild vessel that operates along the Rhône river in France to run entirely on hydrogen fuel cells. The vessel's overall energy chain will be emission-free. The vessel is planned for delivery in 2021.

ABB, SINTEF and Fiskerstrand are test fuel cells for the world’s first conversion of a hydrogen hybrid ferry. The tests aim to provide answers needed for Norwegian shipyard Fiskerstrand to convert an existing ferry to run on a combination of batteries and hydrogen fuel cells. ABB and the SINTEF Ocean laboratory will assess how fuel cells and batteries can function together for short-distance ferry operations.

As the maritime industry grows, its emissions production does as well. Today, the industry is responsible for 2.5% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, with the number expected to grow, as global trade rises. ABB believes electrification can provide a definite solution to this issue. According to ABB, the next generation of ships will be electric, digital and connected.

The Ice-class passenger ferry Suomenlinna II was remotely piloted through test area near Helsinki harbour. This was the world’s first remote trial for an existing passenger ferry, which aimed to prove that human oversight of vessels remotely is achievable with today’s technologies.

Nokia, ABB and Kalmar successfully conducted industrial trials that use the low latency capabilities of 5G to support applications and improve protection and efficiency in smart electricity grid and harbor automation. The trials are part of the Wireless for Verticals research project.

ABB and SINTEF Ocean are conducting a research to test the viability of fuel cells as an energy source for main ship propulsion.
