Stockholm shipping company Waxholmsbolaget has launched Stockholm’s first hybrid ice-going passenger ferry. The ship is powered by hybrid electric propulsion and is serving the Stockholm archipelago. It is able to transport up to 150 passengers.
The ferry will help Stockholm become a fossil fuel-free city by 2040, and provide transportation with lower noise and vibration levels.

The vessel has two diesel engines and a battery pack to create a hybrid power plant providing clean power to propulsion. The hybrid propulsion system is incorporated into a single common unit. The vessel also has an exhaust cleaning elective catalyst reduction system to reduce emissions.
Moreover, the ship includes a marine system which has two hybrid drivetrains with permanent magnet electrical motors and generators.
Commenting on this development, Kari Savolainen, Project Manager at Danfoss, expects that demand for such hybrid electric solutions will rise, as countries try to comply with upcoming environmental regulations. Especially for Scandinavia, electricity will play an important role.
