Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has made a significant step in developing the South Dunes Precinct at the Port of Richards Bay by signing two major Terminal Operator Agreements (TOAs).
One is with Zululand Energy Terminal for the establishment of South Africa’s first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Import Terminal, and the other with FFS Tank Terminals to expand liquid bulk capacity. These agreements support the nation’s energy transformation goals and economic growth.
The LNG terminal aligns with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy’s plan to add 6,000 MW of Gas-to-Power, addressing South Africa’s energy challenges and promoting a more sustainable energy future. It is expected to create approximately 1,000 jobs and further opportunities during the construction phase.
To remind, Recognizing gaps in the law, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) introduced new rules in December 2024 to regulate fuel imports, storage, and exportation, including licensing requirements for operators
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli highlighted the importance of these initiatives in advancing the country’s energy security, economic growth, and environmental goals, while also generating significant employment and skills development opportunities.
