Help raise thousands of pounds for struggling seafarers

Shipping companies and seafarers overcome challenging situations every day. Now the UK’s leading charity for seafarers in need is asking the maritime industry to meet a different type of challenge – and help raise thousands of pounds for struggling seafarers in the process.
Taking place on the weekend of 12-13 July 2014 in the UK’s Lake District, the 24 Peaks Challenge is widely recognised as one of the most demanding but rewarding charity team challenges. The event sees workplace teams scale 24 rugged peaks in just 24 hours, with each peak over 2,400 feet high. The whole course is 32.5 miles long and takes in some of the most stunning countryside in the Lake District, including Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England.
Teams of five/six physically fit walkers plus at least one support crew are required. On day one you will scale 10 peaks in 14 hours covering a distance of 17.5 miles. Then, following a brief overnight stop, you will be up at 5am to tackle a further 14 peaks in 10 hours, a further 14 miles. The route includes regular checkpoints and is manned by safety marshals with first-aiders also
on hand.
The 24 Peaks Challenge provides an excellent opportunity for team-building, both during the gruelling ascents and through the fundraising efforts beforehand. Each team will need to raise 4,000. Seafarers UK will inspire and motivate you with a range of exciting and innovative fundraising suggestions. The charity also provides mountain awareness training days to help make sure teams are prepared.

Organisers aim to attract up to 30 teams to take part and already key international companies have signed-up, including Teekay Shipping where James Pippard, Senior Vice President, Chartering and Freight Trading, said: The Seafarers UK 24 Peaks Challenge is a great and unique coming together of a range of unpredictable pressures and situations.
It’s all about the team and you are helping those around you achieve something quite difficult. There’s a lot of coaching and support, with surprising fortitude and friendships made in 24 hours. We at Teekay Shipping are very proud of both supporting Seafarers UK and for having teams complete previous events in 2010 and 2012, so we are going for our hat trick in 2014.’
Seafarers UK is a charity that helps people in the maritime community, by providing vital funding to support seafarers in need and their families. The charity gives money to organisations and projects that make a real difference to people’s lives and the services it funds have a positive impact on all seafarers.
Last year the organisation gave grants totalling 2.5 million to more than 80 maritime welfare charities. Seafarers UK receives no government funding and is heavily dependent on corporate support, public donations and legacies to maintain its grant-making programme.
