ReCAAP Incident Update
ReCAAP ISC has issued Incident Update regarding an incident involving theoil product tanker, Sunrise 689.
On 5 Oct 14, the ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre (ISC) received information from the Vietnam Focal Point (which is the Vietnam Coast Guard) and the Vietnam Maritime Security Information Centre (MSIC) that the owner of Vietnam-registered oil product tanker Sunrise 689 had lost contact with the master. The tanker departed Singapore for Vietnam on 2 Oct 14 with 5,000 ton of gas oil. The last known location of Sunrise 689 was at 3⁰ 45.76 N, 105⁰ 45.84 E (off Pulau Anambas) on 3 Oct 14.
On 9 Oct 14, the Vietnam Focal Point and the Vietnam Maritime Administration (VMA) reported to the ReCAAP ISC that the master of Sunrise 689 contacted them at about 0405 hrs (local time).
The master mentioned that some personnel armed with guns and knives boarded the vessel, siphoned the gas oil from the tanker to their ship. The perpetuators damaged the communication equipment and two crew were slightly injured.
The Vietnam Coast Guard has despatched their patrol ship to render assistance to the tanker which is making her way back to Vietnam.

The ReCAAP ISC is working closely with the Vietnam authorities including the Vietnam Focal Point, Vietnam Maritime Security Information Centre and Vietnam Maritime Administration to establish what had happened since the company lost communications with the master. Investigation is ongoing to establish the details of the incident. The ReCAAP ISC commends the MMEA for its prompt response and operational follow-up, and the cooperation in information sharing and operational responses between the ReCAAP ISC and Vietnam Focal Point; and its inter-agencies cooperation |
