The Port of València is implementing a private 5G network with over 25,000 connected devices, including phones, vehicles, cameras, environmental sensors, drones, and more.
This initiative supports the Port of València’s digital transformation towards becoming a Smart Port or Port 4.0. The project uses the n40 frequency band regulated by public authorities, ensuring network privacy and customized security. It is funded with a budget of nearly six million euros, partially supported by the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility.
The network will include over 15 n40 base stations, providing comprehensive coverage of port operations. With a maximum throughput of 10 Gbps, it supports geo-redundant core network clusters and integrates market-leading technologies, including Stand-Alone (SA) core, Radio Access Network (RAN), and robust cybersecurity measures.
Initial use cases include enhanced police surveillance using real-time, high-resolution video from cameras on police vehicles and devices, as well as remote maintenance through immersive telepresence and AI.
This is a pioneering project in Europe, coordinated by the Valenciaport Foundation, which is distinguished by the combination of three key features: the size of the port, the comprehensive implementation of 5G technology and the exclusive use of the radio spectrum available under the self-provisioning model
… said Joan Meseguer Llopis, senior manager of innovation projects at the Valenciaport Foundation
The private 5G network will enable advanced services such as passenger connectivity, digital twinning, intelligent surveillance, collision risk detection, and stowage planning.
The Port of València aims for complete independence in managing, upgrading, and expanding its network infrastructure. Full deployment and enhancements are expected by 2027, positioning the port as a leader in adaptability and technological advancement.
To remind, Rijeka Gateway, a new terminal developed by APM Terminals and ENNA Group, is also enhancing digital connectivity with the adoption of a private 5G campus network.
