Annual container handling capacity at the Chinese port of Shanghai exceeded the 40 million TEUs on Friday, marking a global record, according to the Shanghai International Port Group as cited by Xinhua news agency.
The port has now become the world’s busiest container port, since it first started container handling in 1978 with a throughput of 7,951 TEUs.
According to a report published in late 2017 by India’s Associated Chambers of Commerce, India’s total containerized cargo capacity at all its 12 major ports is less than 25% of containerized goods handled at China’s single port of Shanghai.
In December 2017, Shanghai Yangshan Deep Water Port, the world’s biggest automated container terminal, commenced operations. The terminal will use automated handling equipment designed and manufactured domestically for loading and unloading, including a bridge crane, an automated guided vehicle (AGV) and a rail-mounted gantry crane.
In full operation, it will be able to handle 4 million TEUs, further helping the city position itself as an international shipping center.
