The Polish government confirmed that a Russian tanker, which has been docked in the Port of Gdynia for nearly eight years, will be removed.
Poland announced that following the removal, it will also seek compensation for the costs incurred during the ship’s time in the Port of Gdynia. However, the Russian owner of the ship went bankrupt and ceased operations in 2020.
“We are removing Russian scrap from our port,” Deputy Infrastructure Minister Arkadiusz Marchewka wrote on social media following the announcement of the oil tanker removal. The Ministry states that the vessel “poses a threat to the safety of navigation”.
In addition, Mirosław Czapiewski, Vice-President of the Port Authority, told local broadcaster Kanał Plus that in recent months the ship’s moorings loosened during rough weather and it had to be secured by a tugboat.
Usuwamy rosyjski złom z naszego portu.

As reported, the tanker had been detained in October 2017 after failing a port state inspection, with its owners promising repairs that were never carried out, leaving the ship abandoned.
