Pirates armed with guns boarded a product tanker approaching the Bonny Fairway Buoy, on March 6, around 21nm SW of Bonny Island, Nigeria, causing damage in the ship’s equipment.
When the armed pirates approached the vessel, the alarm was raised, the SSAS was activated and all crew mustered in the citadel. The Nigerian Navy was also notified, which sent patrol boats to assist the vessel.
When the pirates boarded the ship all crew were secure in the citadel, and the pirates were unable to take any hostages. They damaged some navigation and communication equipment and escaped.
Later, the Master and crew got out of the citadel and took back control of their tanker and sailed to a safe port. All crewmembers are reported as safe.
