The Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) has initiated the process of expedited cancellation of six Panamanian vessels included in the United Kingdom (UK) Sanctions List.
These actions are supported by the provisions of Executive Decree 512, dated 18 October 2024. This legal mechanism allows the AMP to expeditiously cancel the registration and navigation patent for international or domestic service of vessels of the national merchant fleet that are included in the sanction lists. Additionally, any other document required for navigation that has been issued by the AMP will also be disabled.
The six ships were added to the UK list on 25 November, and the Directorate General of the Merchant Marine has therefore recommended that they be cancelled ex officio.
The State has the responsibility to guarantee the well-being of the Panamanian Registry, free of international sanctions and of vessels linked to or included in sanctions lists that may affect the prestige of the flag. This is a priority issue for this administration.
…said Ramón Franco, Director General of the Merchant Marine.
Since the publication of Executive Decree 512 of 18 October, Panama has cancelled 3 ships and maintains 8 in the process of cancellation.
