The incident happened on Monday 9 December, when a huge ship-to-shore container crane was hit by the container ship “APL Mexico City”. It was then said that the container vessel was being unmoored as its mooring had broken due to squally weather.
Namely, the Port of Antwerp said on Tuesday that wind conditions in the area were observed as calm, amid the resuming of operations.
What is more, the 9,200 teu “APL Mexico City” was moored at the Deurganck dock when suddenly released from its mooring and hit the crane; there were no accidents, or any injuries reported, but the crane was destroyed, and all the cargo operations had to be cancelled, while it was forced the closure of the terminal.
It wasn’t long ago when two dock workers were killed, after the crane of the general cargo ship ‘Bistari 8’ collapsed during cargo operations at Pontianak, Western Kalimantan, Indonesia, on 4 April. According to local sources, the crane reportedly collapsed after trying to lift too heavy weight.
