Analysis and Warning Weekly Report from 3 to 9 October 2013
The Office of Naval Intelligence has issued Piracy Analysis and Warning Weekly Report (PAWW) for the week from 3 to 9 October 2013, to review recent situation regarding piracy and maritime crime incidents in the Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Guinea
Horn of Africa – Piracy Events over the week
Pirate and maritime crime activity in African waters is at low levels. There were no vessels reported as hijackedor attacked during this one-week period. Pirates are no longer holding any hijacked vessels off the Coast of Somalia. Table below is a summary of piracy events that have occured this week, this month and curent/ prior years. The statistics do not include regional dhows/ fishing vessels that were hijacked. Hijacked dhows are frequently used motherships by pirates and released without a ransom being paid.
Gulf of Guinea – Piracy Events over the week
Pirate and maritime crime activity in West African waters is at low levels. There were no vessels reported ashijacked or attacked during this one-week period. Table below is a summary of piracy events that have occured this week, this month and current/ prior years

Terms of Reference
- Attempted Boarding – Close approach or hull-to-hull contact with report that boarding paraphernaliawere employed or visible in the approaching boat.
- Blocking – Hampering safe navigation, docking, or undocking of a vessel as a means of protest.
- Boarding – Unauthorized boarding of a vessel by persons not part of its complement without successfullytaking control of the vessel.
- Firing Upon – Weapons discharged at or toward a vessel.
- Hijacking – Unauthorized seizure and retention of a vessel by persons not part of its complement.
- Kidnapping – Unauthorized forcible removal of persons belonging to the vessel from it.
- Robbery – Theft from a vessel or from persons aboard the vessel.
- Suspicious Approach – All other unexplained activity in close proximity by an unknown vessel.
