The Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) has issued Piracy Analysis and Warning Report for the past week, 23 January – 29 January 2014. The PAWW Report is a review of recent piracy and maritime crime incidents around the Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Guinea.
Horn of Africa – Piracy Events Over Past Week
Pirate and maritime crime activity in East African waters is at low levels. There were no reported ship attacks and one reported boarding of a berthed ship during this one-week period.
Gulf of Guinea – Piracy Events Over Past Week
Pirate and maritime crime activity in West African waters is at a moderate level. There were two reported ship attacks and one reported kidnapping event during this one-week period.
SURFACE CURRENTS:
The Northern Arabian Sea and Gulf of Aden currents are variable with most areas having average speed of 1 knot. The Mozambique Channel currents are variable having average speed of 2 knots. Currents speeds along the Somali basin are northeasterly averaging between 1-2 knots.
SYNOPTIC DISCUSSION:
The Northeastern Monsoonal pattern continues to influence the entire region.
High pressure over the Arabian Peninsula is producing fair winds and seas.
