Ranking among the first five highest exporters of seafarers in the next 10 years
Nigeria will rank among the first five highest exporters of seafarers in the next 10 years if the current tempo of human capacity building in the maritime industry under the Nigerian Seafarers’ Development Programme, NSDP, is sustained, according to The Seafarer Times
NIMASA General Director, Mr Patrick Akpobolokemi, speaking in Lagos yesterday, hinted that Nigeria is able to compete with countries like Philippines, which accounts for over 30% of world’s seafarers exports. NIMASA sent last year a total of 1000 cadet- trainees to undertake courses in Marine Engineering, Natical Sciences and Naval Architecture, among others as part of measure to develop indigenous seafarers’ pool for export.
He noted that capacity building especially in the area of seafarers’ training has become imperative because the youngest seafarer in Nigeria is 60 years of age, which have place an urgent need on the agency as government’s capacity building organ in the industry to take steps to replace them.
