Scatec ASA, ECHEM, and MOPCO have agreed with Yara Clean Ammonia on terms for renewable ammonia offtake from Egypt.
The Sponsors will develop and build up to 480 MW of renewable energy and an up to 240 MW electrolyzer facility for production of renewable hydrogen, which will be used as feedstock for production of renewable ammonia at MOPCO’s existing ammonia production facility at Damietta in Egypt. The targeted production capacity is up to 150,000 tonnes of renewable ammonia per annum.
Scatec also signed a letter of Intent with the European Investment Bank (“EIB”) for long-term financing for the project, showcasing EIB’s commitment to support renewable hydrogen and renewable ammonia projects in Egypt.
Additionally, Misr Fertilizers Production Company (MOPCO), in collaboration with ECHEM and Scatec ASA, is developing a renewable ammonia production facility in Egypt through the Damietta Green Ammonia Company (DGA). The facility will produce about 150,000 metric tons of renewable ammonia for export via Yara Clean Ammonia. MOPCO Chairman and Managing Director Eng. Yara Clean Ammonia CEO Hans Olav Raen noted the project’s role in strengthening their low-emission ammonia sourcing portfolio and their position as a leading trader and distributor. The renewable ammonia from the project will support their customers once the final investment decision is made.

Meanwhile, Scatec CEO Terje Pilskog expressed pleasure in signing the Heads of Terms with Yara Clean Ammonia, highlighting Scatec’s focus on renewable hydrogen projects in Egypt and its expertise from other projects.
EIB Vice President, Gelsomina Vigliotti, emphasized that harnessing renewable energy is vital for the green transition and that accelerating renewable hydrogen production in Egypt can enhance business competitiveness and export opportunities.
