The European Commission has launched a new electronic tagging standard to improve marine equipment safety. The new standard will use RFID (radio-frequency identification) and Data Matrix formatting.
Manufacturers of marine equipment using the electronic tags will have a better protection against counterfeiting and can offer functions such as stock control to their customers. When the e-tag is fully deployed, it will make it easier for authorities to identify wrong certified or outdated equipment.

The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) will contribute to the development of the full potential of electronic tagging. This will happen by developing an easy to use app, which will be available for public authorities.
