Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) announced that it is teaming up with four other companies to join a demonstration project for a used-car export business model, as part of the “2017 International Logistics Business Model Creation Project” backed by Okinawa Prefecture’s Business Promotion Subsidy program.
The consortium is consisted of MOL, OTK Company, a ship agency (managing the consortium), IBC Japan (export and sale of used cars), Autoterminal Japan, Ltd. (pre-export inspection), and Japan Forwarding Agency (export and import arrangements).
Okinawa Prefecture promotes a vacation car rental industry, which supplies used cars constantly as surplus rental vehicles are removed from service. This positions Okinawa as a potential used car export center in the future. The consortium will examine the possibility of establishing a used car export business model in Okinawa based on this demonstration test.
On Friday, July 21st, the Serenity Ace will be the first MOL car carrier to call at the Port of Naha, Okinawa loading used cars bound for New Zealand as part of the project.
