All crew members aboard a Ghanaian-registered fishing vessel targeted in a suspected pirate attack are currently safe, the Chinese foreign ministry confirmed on 31 March.
As reported by Reuters, the attack occurred on March 27, when seven armed individuals boarded the vessel in Ghanaian waters, firing warning shots. Three Chinese nationals went missing and are believed to have been kidnapped, according to Ghana’s military. After the suspected pirates left and the crew came out of hiding, they discovered that the ship’s captain, chief mate and chief engineer were missing, according to the armed forces.
Speaking at a regular press conference, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun assured that all crew members are safe.
Upon learning of the incident, the Chinese Embassy in Ghana immediately activated its emergency response mechanism and has been maintaining close communication with the Ghanaian side,

The vessel, MENGXIN 1, is now docked at Tema Fishing Harbour.
