Ricardo has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from Lloyd’s Register for its multi-megawatt containerised hydrogen fuel cell power plant solution.
This technology, part of the Sustainable Hydrogen Powered Shipping (sHYpS) project, is a ~500kW net, 375kW gross power fuel cell module (RFC500) and a 40-foot containerized power plant that integrates multiple fuel cell modules.
The AiP from Lloyd’s Register indicates that Ricardo’s design meets regulatory requirements, positioning it as a viable solution for maritime industry decarbonization. This approval facilitates further investment and paves the way for full regulatory compliance.
Ricardo is now preparing to test the RFC500 module and assemble the marine containerization system at its new fuel cell facilities in Shoreham, UK.
Jason Oms O’Donnell, Managing Director of Automotive & Industrial at Ricardo, highlighted the achievement as a crucial step towards aiding maritime clients in their decarbonization efforts. He emphasized Ricardo’s expanding hydrogen capabilities and the growing interest from maritime, aerospace, and off-highway sectors.
