The Marine Safety Forum published a Safety Alert on an incident where, during a deck cargo operation in port, the duty AB adjusted a bedding rope to clear the deck for the next lift.
As he tried to stow the rope one of the upper pipes slid down and trapped his right hand. The IP couldn’t manage to free his hand by himself. Stevedores immediately assisted by asking the crane to raise the lift. The AB was in full PPE and was wearing impact gloves.
Why Did it Happen / Cause
The IP did not anticipate the movement of the tubulars as they settled and put his hand in the line of fire unnecessarily.
Corrective Actions Taken / Recommendations
The use of Impact gloves, the first aid treatment applied and subsequent treatment at A&E reduced the severity of the injury significantly. IP was able to return to work on restricted duties. Settling of tubular cargo is a known hazard within the industry. A safety flash was issued to the vessel owners fleet to notify them of the incident, followed up by information on the “Movement of Bundled Tubulars” and “Deck Pipe pins”.
