The crew of M/V SOUNION, 61,000 DWT bulk carrier managed by Laskaridis Maritime S.A., was involved in a search and rescue operation off the coast of Chile on March 16th.
The master of the carrier responded to a distress call by MRCC Chile requesting assistance with an emergency situation involving a small yacht/trimaran named RUSSIAN OCEAN WAY. The yacht had been drifting for several hours and had sent out a distress call following a mechanical failure.
One Brazilian and two Russian citizens as well as a small Chihuahua dog were rescued and taken safely onboard. The sailors and the dog were well known internationally and had a strong following as they were on a round-the-world expedition. They had only started crossing the Pacific Ocean from Chile a few days before when they ran into trouble.
A few weeks ago, vessel MV LEONIDAS which is also managed by Laskaridis Maritime S.A., helped the crew of fishing boat “Benjamin” that had been drifting for 25 days.
