A woman had to be transmitted to a hospital, after a BBQ day at the beach. The victim suffered second and third degree burns to her foot, when she stepped barefoot to pick the BBQ stones, as she didn’t think that the sand would have absorbed the heat of the BBQ stones.
The woman who suffered burn injuries reported that during their BBQ they used three disposable BBQs on the sand and when they finished cooking they put them out and left to cool. Four hours later, they began packing up to leave.
As the woman commented
The BBQs were stone cold and we started picking them up ready to dispose of them. After the first was picked up I stepped forward (barefoot) to pick up the second and onto the sand that the first had been on. I could not believe how hot it was.
The incident resulted to a partial and full thickness burns to both the sole and side of the victim’s foot.

When the USCG arrived at the scene of the incident, they transferred the victim to Morriston Hospital burns unit for debriding.
In addition, the USCG tweeted
HM Coastguard is advising people to be very careful when clearing up their disposable BBQs on the beach.
Concluding, the victim advises that when one is using throwaway or portable BBQs on the beach:
- Try to keep them safely above the sand, on purpose built stands or rocks
- Do not assume that a cold BBQ means the sand is safe
- Ensure the sand underneath is completely cooled as soon as possible and definitely before you leave the beach
- Be aware of anyone walking near the affected sand, especially children and dogs
