Glander International Bunkering signed a deal with Asyad Shipping to provide the company with digitalized, artificial-intelligence (AI) bunkering solutions.
According to Glander International Bunkering, the deal officially kickstarts three projects. These projects include an AI-based propulsion system, a digitalized bunker procurement solution, and comprehensive bunker management. The deal also sees the integration of AI technology onboard Asyad Shipping’s fleet of VLCCs.
This AI initiative reduces a vessel’s fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, which drives sustainability efforts towards the Oman Vision 2040. It also aligns with the IMO target to reduce carbon emissions by up to 40% by 2030.

During the 2023 SMART4SEA Athens Forum, Mr. Themistoklis Sardis, IT Manager, Costamare Shipping Company S.A. explained that there are several AI applications in the shipping industry.
Companies can implement AI using techniques like machine learning, natural language processing, and robotics. The goal of AI research is to create systems that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and language translation.
The data-driven concept continuously monitors performance. The AI bunkering solution utilizes algorithms to optimize fuel consumption and ensure efficient propulsion in varying conditions.
We are especially pleased to work with Asyad Shipping in this pivotal move to drive sustainability, innovation and digitalization. Fuel management is a critical component for any shipping company, which is why we are keen to help our clients optimize their voyages and set new benchmarks.
Lloyd’s Register predicted the maritime industry to double AI spending from $931 million in 2022 to $2.7 billion in the next five years. This rise is expected due to increased use of AI in autonomous shipping, navigation support, and vessel performance optimization.
