Rescue operations for the large freight ship that ran aground off Yeniköy district on 21th have started, temporarily closing the two-way international shipping traffic in Istanbul’s Bosporus from 8.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m on Tuesday 27th, 2016.
According to FleetMon, the Bulk carrier Star Harmony ran aground in Bosphorus Strait at around 0520 UTC Dec 21, while transiting in southern direction. Vessel with no pilot on board stranded off fairway after engine failure, and grounded near Enikoy embankment, western coast.
The vessel, registered in Panama, was carrying corn from Ukraine’s Odessa port to Egypt and ran aground off Yeniköy to avoid a collision with the famous waterfront houses by a distance of only a couple of meters. No loss of life, injuries or environmental hazards were reported.
Local news informs that rescue operations stated after approximately one week, therefore, ships and vessels participating in the local Bosporus traffic will be able to continue their course, on the condition that warnings from stations are regarded and necessary life and environment security are provided.
