The first hybrid battery-powered cargo ship for the European market left the shipyard this week preparing to enter into service.
The first of two bulk carriers being built for Norway’s Aasen Shipping, the Aasfjell will also claim the title as the largest self-discharger with an excavator in the market.
The Aasfjell and its sister ship Aasfoss are outfitted with a hybrid propulsion system to reduce emissions and run emission-free in port.
Each of the vessels is being outfitted with a 339-kWh battery system to power all in port operations. The battery package will enable propulsion and maneuvering in port without the main engine.
The battery package is expected to reduce fuel consumption by approximately 400 tons per year.
The vessels’ main engine is capable of reducing fuel consumption and emissions, while the hull design has also been optimized for maximum efficiency.
