With ECSA’s piracy photo exhibition
The European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA)and the Danish Shipowners’ Association organised a maritimepiracy photo exhibition in the European Parliament, with thesupport of Anna Rosbach, a Danish Member of the EuropeanParliament. From 3 to 7 March, the exhibition aimed toincrease awareness and help policy makers visualise theextent of the problem and the threat it poses to the thousandsof seafarers and ships transiting pirate-infested regions.
Theexhibition met with a lot of interest and positive commentsfrom Members of the Parliament.A few weeks later ECSAalso issued a jointstatement with its socialcounterpart the EuropeanTransport Workers’Federation (ETF) onthe need to maintaina credible militarypresence in East Africa where pirates take advantage of theweak rule of law in Somalia to carry out their operationswith virtually complete impunity.
The social partners alsounderline the necessity to address the increasing number ofincidents in West Africa through diplomacy, political dialogue, development cooperation and the sharing of best practices.
