Egypt plans to build a railroad line connecting the Red Sea with the Mediterranean via a land bridge. At first, a line will connect the Port of Alexandria with the Port of Damietta. A little later, the project will connect the Port of Damietta to the Port of Nuweiba. The project wants to accelerate the movement of people and goods between the two seas.
A logistics zone will also be created near the Port of Nuweiba, along with an inland terminal for freight distribution. The financial and technical assessment of the project is expected to be ready within four months, while the whole project will cost about $3.1 billion.

However, local media report that because of the high cost, Egypt is possible to invite international consortiums to place bids to construct the new line in July. The railroad would be used in the transport of materials necessary for the rebuilding of Iraq and Syria, Egypt said.
Nevertheless, some say that the project could be an answer to Israel’s plan to build a rail freight link between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea.
The Israeli plan consists of a rail line of around 300km from the Israeli Port of Eilat on the Red Sea to the Port of Ashdod on the Mediterranean.
