Typhoon Hagibis is approaching wide areas from western to northern Japan in the upcoming weekend. The Japan Club highlights that shipowners and vessels should be extra cautious of the weather conditions, and should ensure the safety of their crew and their vessels.
The Club notes that
We would urge members to provide safety measures against rough sea, obtaining the latest weather information such as a maximum instantaneous wind speed, a storm warning area, a projected path and so on.
The Club further recommends that vessels staying at anchorages to avoid typhoons should take appropriate measures against dragging anchor including engine stand-by in advance.
In May 2019 the Japan Club published a loss prevention bulletin on marine weather and the ship handling in rough seas, explaining that although navigating through challenging weather conditions has improved over the years, it still remains a challenge as the precise weather prediction means vessels use are not 100% guaranteed.
