DP World has joined the Net Zero Supply Chain (NZSC) Initiative, aimed at decarbonizing Canada’s freight-transportation supply chains.
Launched in early 2024 by GLOBE Series, Delphi, and 7GEN, the initiative unites retail and transportation leaders to create Canada’s first net-zero supply chain pilot. Its primary goals are to enhance efficiency, reduce carbon emissions in urban goods transportation, and develop a data-driven case study to promote the adoption of decarbonization technologies.
The NZSC Initiative consists of three phases. Phase 1 identified common goals, aiming to transport goods from the Port of Vancouver to a retail store within a 100-kilometer radius using net-zero technologies.
Meanwhile, Phase 2, currently underway, is focusing on defining the local project, including transportation routes and decarbonization strategies. This phase will conclude this summer with a roadmap for reducing emissions.
Phase 3, set to begin in September 2024, will implement the local pilot and address barriers to net-zero technology adoption, with plans to expand the pilot project across Canada.
To remind, According to a report by WWF, Canadian shipping alone contributed eight million tonnes of CO2 in 2019, with the organization noting that there is a need for better understanding of both emissions and impacts resulting from shipping activity in the Canadian waters.
