The Danish Maritime Authority has – in cooperation with a number of business organisations – drawn up three short guidelines on the regulations on the determination of the weight of packed sea containers.
In February, the Danish Maritime Authority informed about future regulations on the verification of the weight of packed containers. The regulations apply to ships that initiate an international voyage after 1 July 2016.
The Danish Maritime Authority and a number of business organisations have – in close cooperation – drawn up three short guidelines describing how to implement the provisions.
“The guidelines have been developed in a very constructive cooperation that has made it possible to unite the various interests ashore and at sea. I hope that the guidelines will help especially shore-based companies to incorporate the new regulations in their operations,” says Senior Adviser Steen Nielsen from the Danish Maritime Authority.
At the same time, he stresses that the determination of the weight is an important part of the efforts made to promote global safety in connection with the carriage of containers by sea. The hope is that it will help prevent accidents such as, for example, the loss of the container vessel MOL COMFORT.
There are two methods for determining the weight of packed sea containers. The packed container can either be weighed or the individual items in the container can be added to the container’s own weight.
