The Danish Maritime Authority is enhancing efforts to ensure tankers at Skagen Red comply with safety, environmental, and seafarer protection regulations to minimize the risks of the shadow fleet.
The effort is being made in response to the activity of older ships transporting oil through the Danish straits, which poses an increased risk and concern for safety at sea, seafarers and the environment. The Danish Maritime Authority is therefore carrying out port state control of ships that cannot be said to be in harmless passage and that anchor at Skagen Red.
The effort is in line with the Danish Maritime Authority’s targeted work to promote international quality shipping characterized by a high level of safety and health on clean seas.
Port state control focuses on tankers, as an accident involving damage or sinking of tankers could have particularly far-reaching consequences for safety, health and the environment.
It also follows from existing selection methods of ships for port state control that tankers have a particularly high risk profile, which means that this type of ship is prioritized for inspection to a higher degree than other types of ships.
