Cyprus will start a tender to purchase an FSRU next month at Vasiliko. The tender will also include the acquisition of relevant infrastructure, and aims at increasing the country’s ability to import LNG and use it for electricity generation.
This development comes after the Cypriot Energy Minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis submitted an MoU between the government and six private companies, regarding the removal of the fuel storage facilities at Larnaca to Vasiliko.

According to local media, a timetable is already established, which sets as a deadline the 31st of December, 2019 to move the liquid fuels, and create LPG facilities by December 31, 2020.
However, last month Larnaca municipality rejected a third draft of the MoU regarding the relocation of the oil and gas firms from the district by 2020.
Commenting on the situation, Mr. Lakkotrypis said that there are great incentives for these oil companies if the take part in this project. He explained that the geographic position of Larnana positions the city at the heart of fuel facilities, however the government wants to exploit its touristic potential.
As a result, the companies that have land there, they can relocate and exploit the area for tourism, which is something that the government as well as Larnaca want.
