Taking steps to improve the industry
The Cyprus government is fully committed to supporting the shipping industry and is taking steps to improve the sector, Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Marios Demetriades told during the opening session of the Cyprus Maritime conference in Limassol.
“I would like to assure you that the Cyprus government is fully committed to safeguarding the shipping and maritime sector by doing the utmost to guarantee continuous sustainable growth,” Demetriades said.
He said a study completed through the cooperation of the public and private sectors in July has highlighted several points where more attention is required and a number of decisions have been made in relation to the rcommendations.
These include upgrading the maritime administration, new promotional campaigns and tax incentive, and developing a new corporate identity for the Department of Merchant Shipping.
The Minister said that the study identified the following five pillars:
- The development and implementation of a National Shipping Promotion Strategy;
- Cooperation within the Cyprus Maritime Cluster;
- Establishment of Shipping Incentive Schemes;
- Fine tuning of the Ship Registry Pricing Policy;
- Development of the One-Stop-Shipping Shop.
Three working groups where established in order to examine and analyse the various measures proposed by the study and to suggest ways of implementation. The working groups consist of government officials and stakeholders of the maritime cluster.
