Ponant’s luxury cruise ship, Le Boréal has been evacuated after an engine room fire which broke out last night while the ship was sailing off the Falkland Islands, according to news sources.
There were no injuries to passengers or crew from the fire, which was “of a technical nature” and has been extinguished, the line said. Le Boreal’s passengers were transferred to sister ship L’Austral, which also was in the region, and were taken to Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands to be repatriated to their homes.
Royal Navy vessel HMS Clyde was in the area at the time but was not required to assist.
Ponant confirmed that Le Boréal suffered from “a fire of a technical nature” which broke out in a compartment of the engine room. There were 187 passengers and 160 crew on board Le Boréal at the time of the incident. All passengers were evacuated using two tenders after following emergency procedures.
