Containership HMM St. Petersburg and oil tanker Gloria Maris collided off the coast of Algeciras, Spain, on 3 December.
The incident occurred near the southeastern coast of Algeciras. The HMM St. Petersburg had 24 crew members aboard, while the Gloria Maris carried 25. As reported, both ships remained stable after the collision, and no injuries or pollution have been reported. All crew members on both vessels were unharmed in the accident.
Furthermore, initial inspections showed that the vessels sustained damage to their side structures but posed no risk of spills or sinking. The Gloria Maris appeared to have noticeable damage to its bow.
After the incident, the authorities at the port of Algeciras allowed the containership to dock, while the tanker was instructed to anchor nearby. Moreover, both vessels are currently detained by Spanish authorities near Algeciras, pending additional safety inspections before they are allowed to depart.
“The Maritime Captaincy of Algeciras has ordered the retention of the two vessels and will carry out inspections by the safety inspectors,” Salvamento Maritimo wrote on X.
The HMM St. Petersburg, was returning to Europe after a voyage to China. The Gloria Maris had recently unloaded crude oil in Cartagena, Spain, and was traveling in ballast condition.
